LDI – Lighting Design International – I have been absent from this show for 2 years and I have returned! My observations are the show, although still great for lighting, AV, tech and designers in the theatrical marketplace it lacked a real whose who in the show world (at least on the trade show floor)!

I was not invited to any of the large-scale parties that used to happen.  I believe that they just were not happening as opposed to ME not being invited!

The Trends I saw on the floor included:

• Software – the manipulation and doubling and quadrupling of things, if you get what I mean!

• Wireless

• Control – controllable LED – Lighting designers and tech need to control the WHOLE room – not just the stage

• DMX vs. Ethernet Protocol

• Standard Theatrical Lights being replaced by LED fixtures – LED better and brighter

• Moving lights working in tight synergy

• LED Screens – different quality – and price points – modular, flexible, etc

• Lighted costumes (control is a trend)

• Curved Truss and Truss used in creative ways

New product off the LDI 2011 Orlando floor:

• Wirefree LED – batter op / remote control / dmx

• Pipe and base 2.0

• New developments in software – enabling Ethernet protocol (who?)

• New Developments in Lasers, Fog and Water effects

• Falling water as a projection surface (controllable and brandable)

• Fabric as a lighting and projection surface

• LED – screens all types and price points

• Screen goo

• “Green” energy supply advances (battery powered / solar charged)

• Truss

All and all a great show, although I was surprised that there was not a lot of projection and mapping.  InfoComm – another Tech and Lighting show is in June and from what I hear it IS where the projections and mappers are!  I hope to see you there!

The installation began with projection surfaces integrating into the existing playground poles, creating a corridor. As the installation came along, we worked with Chikaia and created the textures on site using several different methods to otherwise ordinary fabric. Once the sun set and our lights were in place it was showtime. The installation was a huge hit for those who came out to Bring to Light Festival in Green Point, and it was great seeing all of the different ways that people would interact making this a true sculptural performance environment. Groups gathered on the side of the fabric opposite the light source watching live projection theater provided by eager participants.  Many people even came around multiple times finding different props to add intrigue to their moment in the spotlight. Last night, we sponsored one of Bring to Light’s workshops involving MadMapper which is one of the leading tools for video projection mapping today. If you’re not already familiar with this up and coming technology, you should check out a few videos of the growing art-form. MadMapper is software which provides an easy-to-use interface for mapping three-dimensional points to a two-dimensional plane which allowing you to create dynamic visuals that are completely adapted to the surface on which you’re projecting. Architectural works provide an amazing canvas for this technology, which we’ve seen recently on iconic New York structures such as the Manhattan Bridge from last week’s DUMBO Arts Festival or the New Museum (pictured above).

For this workshop, we found that our Pinkometry series provides ideal surfaces to demonstrate the capabilities of projection mapping. These pieces can be easily stacked and angled, and the end-results can be stunning. We definitely look forward to seeing what possibilities lie ahead for this emerging medium. Expect to see even more dazzling light forms at the Bring to Light festival in Greenpoint, Brooklyn this Saturday starting at 6pm!

For the past decade the band Bright Eyes has been rising in popularity amongst it’s indie rock fan-base. So how does a band whose melancholic brand of folk and pop fill one of the most famous stages in the world in front of 2 sold out crowds of nearly 6,000 people? Our coves were hard to miss this past week at Radio City Music Hall, providing an intimate setting overhead for the members of the band while providing ideal surfaces for the alternating lighting effects on display throughout the shows.

The folks at Theatrical Media Services, Inc called upon us to provide the stage décor for Bright Eyes current tour, showcasing our Large Coves for these events and also using Crescents in some of the other stops. Our fabric structures are great for concert stage sets as they can easily be built and broken down for each stop on the tour and work great with all different lighting effects.

Well it was US of course!

This year’s MTV Video Music Awards’ stage was a massive, towering design inspired by sleek mid-century modern architecture that stretched 70 feet out into the theatre seats, bringing the audience practically onstage. The soaring set, by German designer Florian Wieder, required over 2600 seats to be removed from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

The gigantic Moss fabric structure canopies were created in a stark white fabric to become the canvas for state-of-the-art lighting. The technology continued to blast throughout the show, changing for each performance and presenter. At other times, the sweeping fabric “petals” stood out in stark contrast to the video pulsating behind on giant screens enveloping the theatre.

The combination of the dramatic tension fabric shapes, dynamic lighting design and full throttle performances made for a dynamic event! The stage created an environment that featured everyone in the best light (pun intended!) and left both the live and viewing audiences feeling inspired!

The is what Stephen Friedman, MTV’s general manager said about the stage set:

“When the audience sees it for the first time, it’s going to look like no other show they’ve ever seen, I promise you that. Our team has transformed it. I’ve never seen a set quite like this in the history of the VMAs. The way that it’s configured enabled us to mould it to exactly the way we wanted it.”

MTV themselves said: Eye-popping design puts mid-centruy architecture “through the prism of 2010,’ says show’s executive producer.

It is all about the SET!

“Everyone who walks in and sees it is like, ‘Aaah!’ ” Dave Sirulnick, VMA executive producer, told MTV News. “Rick Ross came in and said, ‘It’s like Pandora.’ ”

Custom-made in New York and Los Angeles, assembled over the course of two (very long) weeks inside the Nokia Theatre and drawing inspiration from the sleek mid-century designs of Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen, the set is a massive, all-encompassing thing, swooping and soaring (like, really high) and practically swallowing up the entirety of the theater itself. It’s so impressive, in fact, that you don’t have to be an architecture enthusiast to appreciate it.

Pink Inc. partnered with Delphi Productions, Creative Technology, Exhibit Lighting Group, for Red 7 Medias Ex Awards at the Event Marketing Summit in Chicago the last week of April. We provided venue décor and a fabric stage set.

Our Giant Screens served as the backdrop for dynamic, ever-changing looks during the presentations and keynote. Using distinct projection and lighting, every event had a unique background.

Our custom branded cubes, printing courtesy of Pictura Graphics, positioned outside the main ballroom, tumbled, turned and revolved as a live, experiential sign throughout the event. Excellent work to all involved! Thank you!
