LDI – Lighting Design International – I have been absent from this show for 2 years and I have returned! My observations are the show, although still great for lighting, AV, tech and designers in the theatrical marketplace it lacked a real whose who in the show world (at least on the trade show floor)!

I was not invited to any of the large-scale parties that used to happen.  I believe that they just were not happening as opposed to ME not being invited!

The Trends I saw on the floor included:

• Software – the manipulation and doubling and quadrupling of things, if you get what I mean!

• Wireless

• Control – controllable LED – Lighting designers and tech need to control the WHOLE room – not just the stage

• DMX vs. Ethernet Protocol

• Standard Theatrical Lights being replaced by LED fixtures – LED better and brighter

• Moving lights working in tight synergy

• LED Screens – different quality – and price points – modular, flexible, etc

• Lighted costumes (control is a trend)

• Curved Truss and Truss used in creative ways

New product off the LDI 2011 Orlando floor:

• Wirefree LED – batter op / remote control / dmx

• Pipe and base 2.0

• New developments in software – enabling Ethernet protocol (who?)

• New Developments in Lasers, Fog and Water effects

• Falling water as a projection surface (controllable and brandable)

• Fabric as a lighting and projection surface

• LED – screens all types and price points

All and all a great show, although I was surprised that there was not a lot of projection and mapping.  InfoComm – another Tech and Lighting show is in June and from what I hear it IS where the projections and mappers are!  I hope to see you there!

This fall at the Pink Powered by Moss booth at the LDI Show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando we took a different approach.  We approached the show as a tool for market research. Under that umbrella, we present the Wave Forms. These 4’ x 4’ units stack to create a textural backdrop, wall, ceiling treatments and towers.  Arrange the Wave Forms in different configurations to create dynamic textures.  Take a look and let us know what YOU think!

The installation began with projection surfaces integrating into the existing playground poles, creating a corridor. As the installation came along, we worked with Chikaia and created the textures on site using several different methods to otherwise ordinary fabric. Once the sun set and our lights were in place it was showtime. The installation was a huge hit for those who came out to Bring to Light Festival in Green Point, and it was great seeing all of the different ways that people would interact making this a true sculptural performance environment. Groups gathered on the side of the fabric opposite the light source watching live projection theater provided by eager participants.  Many people even came around multiple times finding different props to add intrigue to their moment in the spotlight. Shadows

On Saturday, October 1st, the second annual Bring to Light festival took place in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This nocturnal art party was held simultaneously with several other Nuit Blanche events throughout the world that have been gaining steam as an international celebration ever since the first Nuit Blanche that originated in Paris in 2001.  Over two dozen cities participated, including Brussels, Amsterdam,  Montreal, Toronto, and Washington. For New York’s version, a large section of the Greenpoint was chosen as the site, utilizing parks, warehouses, streets, as well as the waterfront which provided a breathtaking view of the Manhattan skyline. As to be expected, the major element used in many of the installations was light and we saw all kinds of it at this festival; from projection, to LED’s and video-mapping. We were also involved with the festival as sponsors, providing our fabric screens for some of the installations. In addition we worked alongside artist Chakaia Booker creating a series of screens altered with different textures and washed out with strong spotlights in a piece called Shadows. It was great seeing the crowd interact with the screens and create a performance piece of their own. Check out some photos from Bring to Light below and stay tuned for some more on Shadows . . .

Last night, we sponsored one of Bring to Light’s workshops involving MadMapper which is one of the leading tools for video projection mapping today. If you’re not already familiar with this up and coming technology, you should check out a few videos of the growing art-form. MadMapper is software which provides an easy-to-use interface for mapping three-dimensional points to a two-dimensional plane which allowing you to create dynamic visuals that are completely adapted to the surface on which you’re projecting. Architectural works provide an amazing canvas for this technology, which we’ve seen recently on iconic New York structures such as the Manhattan Bridge from last week’s DUMBO Arts Festival or the New Museum (pictured above).

For this workshop, we found that our Pinkometry series provides ideal surfaces to demonstrate the capabilities of projection mapping. These pieces can be easily stacked and angled, and the end-results can be stunning. We definitely look forward to seeing what possibilities lie ahead for this emerging medium. Expect to see even more dazzling light forms at the Bring to Light festival in Greenpoint, Brooklyn this Saturday starting at 6pm!

Gravity Free is a design conference that I have just returned from. Designers from many disciplines shared their stories and work.

Gravity Free promises attendees to come curious and leave inspired. And indeed I did!

The salon format is several sets of  2-3 18 – minute presentations – all with different designers – a question/answer period, a recap and roundtables. The whole group sticks together through all activities.

This is what I HEARD:

Creativity!  •  Passion!  •  Communicate your Message!  •  Connect!  •  Go for it!  •  Use your Intuition!  •  Speak Up!  •  Don’t always go with the Flow!  •  COMMIT!

Creativity – Knows no bounds, It is a moving target, A process in which we embark together, To get a new surprising result, Only after we are done do we truly know its value!

Passion -Work from your heart, Follow your passion, Fall in Love, Feel things, Live it, Be in it!

Message – Find the humor, Find the message, Make the message complex, Yet leave it open ended, Get your audience to work too, To work with you to fill in the blank, They then become a part of it and it personalizes their experience!

Connect with your audience – This connection is deepest, And the relationships build your work and work opportunities, Keep working for free if need be!

Go for it! – Jump in – go for it, Take the Dare, Move if FORWARD, Believe in yourself!

Use your Intuition! – Feel, Be curious, Use your intuition, Plug Away, Don’t stop, Live the LIFE!

Marian Bantjes’s dense rich, image laden curiosities makes you want to look as she borders on kitsch (her words)

Jason Bruges and Marcel Wilson explore the unknown space that is the intersection of architecture, sculpture, technology and experience design.

Jess Goncher, production designer was fascinating as I learned about the look of films! (I should have known but it surprised me!)

Graphics Rick Valicenti, and his company Thirst as well as Andrew Ashton from Australia showed us that graphics and branding can be very quirky AND powerful!

Bob Gruen, well known Rock Photographer says – lives the life – when you are immersed in it the best work comes out – right time right place – keep going – keep saying yes! And it isn’t always for money…

Gai Cherardi from LA Eyeworks showed us through her design process and how it evolved says -– knock yourself off!  (that is too great!)
