I am happy to be newly back from TSE 2012 – The Special Event 2012 in Tampa, Florida.  I have lots of thoughts and experiences so I will present a series of posts. Welcome to the first!

REthink REPink Powered by Moss booth and lobby installation Reconfigured

Pink Powered by Moss booth – When our creative team came together we created a campaign based on the mood of the times that we reflected as RE. REdefine REignite, REfresh, REthink, REPink! So REconfiguring our booth was of utmost importance with REconfigurable products. The time today requires us to REnew, REinspire, REcharge and the more we played with RE; the more fun we had!

Graphics enhanced our color identifying booth with a giveaway of 8 assorted pink campaign type buttons for you pinning pleasure (you have heard of Pinterest by now; havent’ you?) and our REshuffle ipod shuffle giveaway was fun.  We had a winner each day, and we still have more iPods to giveaway in our REshuffle iPod shuffle giveaway so stay tuned!!!

So below, see our booth REconfigured three different ways.  Our décor was REarranged each couple of hours out in the lobby, thank you Jesse Zryb for REvitalizing the lobby and documenting The Special Event 2012 for us.

What I loved about BizBash this year was the effort and energy BACK on the tradeshow floor.  Everyone who took a booth seemed to truly make the effort to do something beyond an easy pop up display.  The Exhibitors all seemed to have a collective unconscious to show well! And all the moving parts and pieces that create the event community were out in force! We mixed and mingled right there on the trade show floor, the night before at 300 and later that evening at SIR.  Let’s also not forget the social media lounge, and my booths, Pink Powered by Moss and The ISES NY!

I am hoping that what is being communicated is we are all ready to bring out our Sunday best!

Either way – I saw some great stuff – So thank you very much to the photographers Sarah Merians and Brightroom Photography, as I have used their photos in this article.  So thank you!  Congratulations to all the award winners! We just got news that we won IFAI’s (Industrial Fabrics Association International) Outstanding Achievement Award for Interior Display for our Powerstation booth! This booth made it’s first appearance at The Special Event in Phoenix, AZ before being re-branded for the Exhibitor show in Las Vegas, NV. You can read more about the booth in our blog posts from each trade show. We’d also like to congratulate our team for bringing in an Award of Excellence for the 2010 MTV Music Video Awards in the same category!

Pink Powered by Moss wins IFAI 2011 International Achievement Award

(Roseville, MN – Oct. 26, 2011) Pink Powered by Moss, New York, NY, was recognized with the 2011 International Achievement Award (IAA) for design excellence in specialty fabrics applications. The ceremony took place at the IFAI Expo Americas 2011 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Md. on October 25.

Pink Powered by Moss received an Outstanding Achievement Award for its Powerstation project. The project was recognized in the competition’s Interior Display category.

The annual IFAI Expo Americas is the largest specialty fabrics trade show in the Americas, and for more than six decades, IAA has recognized excellence in design and innovation, highlighting truly spectacular work in the specialty fabrics industry.

Entrants were encouraged to submit projects and compete in 35 categories in this 64^th competition. In all, IFAI received 385 entries from 16 countries. Entries were judged by industry experts, editors, architects, educators and design professionals, who were selected for their knowledge in a particular field of study or product area. Winners were selected based on complexity, design, workmanship, uniqueness and function.

IFAI encourages specialty fabric projects of all sizes and type. The goal of IAA is to promote awareness of the specialty fabrics used in thousands of products and applications. All entries receive prominent recognition at IFAI Expo Americas. Entrants receive additional publicity through coverage in IFAI magazines, as well as press releases distributed to media professionals.

The International Achievement Awards competition is sponsored by IFAI, a not-for-profit trade association whose 2,000 member companies represent the international specialty fabrics marketplace.

This fall at the Pink Powered by Moss booth at the LDI Show at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando we took a different approach.  We approached the show as a tool for market research. Under that umbrella, we present the Wave Forms. These 4’ x 4’ units stack to create a textural backdrop, wall, ceiling treatments and towers.  Arrange the Wave Forms in different configurations to create dynamic textures.  Take a look and let us know what YOU think!

The 2011 edition of the New York’s BizBash Expo & Awards was held last week on October 19th at the Javits Center and Pink could be found in several places on the show floor. In addition to having our own booth we also provided Circle Surround backdrops for ISES New York as well as the Event Leadership Institute. These portable configurations of 2′ Moons serve as a great backdrop for show booths and are well-suited towards getting your message across in a fashionable manner. Over at our own booth we used each 2′ moon to show off our portfolio. The moons were fixed to the frames from 3 15′ segments of Ribbonesque creating a dynamic back wall that expresses movement. We also placed a fully dressed ribbon on top for bold  signage. Another product on the floor this year that was receiving a lot of attention was the JuiceBar, which was also nominated for Best New Product. As the show went on and people were finding their phones drained from a day away from the office; clusters began to form around the JuiceBar, which serves as a charging station for mobile and other electronic devices as well as providing elegant signage at 8′-6″ tall.

The Event Camp Twin Cities as a whole was a couple of days of connecting a lot of technical ideas with event practices, virtual audience and the combination of Pods –remote branches of the conference goers in other cities.  AND a very fun experiment was had by all!  And The EXPERIMENATION was the point of the conference to begin with, and Sam and Ray stressed this throughout their contact with us.

Emilie Barta – tYophe voice of the virtual audience and Glenn Thayer, the master of the airwaves they, together inhabited the broadcast studio provided by Sonic Foundry and Metro Connections.

The studio felt like a news center where the virtual audience was kept engaged and connected to our live portion of our event camp.  Emilie and Glenn interviewed people all day long as made good sense.

I was interviewed by Emilie twice. Ryan Hansen and I talked about the event décor and the fabric décor that my company Pink Powered by Moss brought. And then I spoke about the class I presented – 3d Design in the Future of Events – My class went well – it was  a conversation, a conversation of one…me!  This informative talk was on 3d techniques and trends in Event Design that are currently popular.  You learned about me and my history, working with event design concepts, tools used in 3d design, material and technical trends, current event trends of all sorts of case studies – from tradeshows to technical innovations.

We played a game throughout the event.  It was tough to get started, information overload!  I liked it though. I think the makers should use it in a much more concentrated dose – like over a half day or a day – It will be more successful that way.  It is a good game.

I heard lots of similar stuff – Hybrid Hybrid Hybrid!!!

One of the most exciting things about the Event Camp model is that this group of Event Professionals (#eventprofs) is growing, is experimental, experiential, is passionate, and together we are discovering and uncovering new territory. We are trying different things and speaking to the live and online audience.

So join #eventprofs on our Twitter Chats – Visit and participate in EventCamps and generally remember that Technology is here to stay and LIVE Face to Face Meetings and Events will ALWAYS be necessary but the future of  F2F events will continue to interface between live, hybrid and cyber connectivity.

This is a smaller conference (no trade show portion) and this creates a more intimate event which means you really get to meet new professionals and deepen the connections and relationships that you already have.

Our host city, St. Louis was HOT! It was also very humid!  Wow it was quite a summer.  Our host hotel, the Union Station Marriott is a beautiful old train station building.  I have enclosed some photo’s as it is just BEAUTIFUL! I loved the pool! And this hotel hosted us well.

We began with ISES Leadership Training – Many of you know, this year I am the ISES NY Metro Chapter President. So I have learned more about the societies rules and regs.  Actually before I became a board member who knew that we had a gavel and we motion and second the motion in our board meetings!

I especially liked sharing and problem solving with other board members, especially the other presidents and regional VP’s. It is a great way to get ideas and broaden the idea of what ISES is and what we can accomplish in our year.

The International Special Event Society is an association that connects peers, educates, and promotes best practices in the industry. Membership can bring you contacts, for both buyers and sellers, a job perhaps or a job candidate, knowledge and new information, and ISES is a place to make sure our EVENTS industry can be the best that it can be!

That said – One of my favorite parts of the event was The Spirit of Excellence. The award show the hard work and the camaraderie of ISES. ISES NYC is very excited to be awarded the Spirit of Excellence for Special Projects – the Sustainability Forum.  And our chapter member Morgan Steele Connocher was awarded Excellence in Member Recruitment.

The Esprit Awards finished off the 2011 ISES EventWorld with a beautiful room, a slew of wonderful awards and a bunch of partying events professionals.  A little steam was let off and FUN was had by all!

When the Latin music workout/lifestyle phenomenon Zumba was planning to produce their 10th Anniversary Instructors Convention, they were determined to find that extra special decorative element that would not only reinforce their brand identity but would serve to add a visual excitement and extra energy to the festivities.

When Zumba producer Jonathan Perlman first met with the Pink team in Orlando in March, he knew instantly that he had found the right decorative design company – everyone shared the same fun vibe and artistic sensibility. This was made especially clear when Pink presented its initial design proposals to the delight of Zumba’s creative team. Clearly, a synergy was formed and a creative relationship was born – one that promises an exiting future of collaboration.

The presence, power and extra-large scale of Pink’s fabric structures along with the integration of Zumba’s colors into unique designs made these two companies a perfect match.

An unexpected challenge was the rigging limitations imposed by the Peabody Hotel, Orlando. Having recently opened a new wing to accommodate such massive conventions like Zumba, the Peabody was being particularly protective, perhaps rightly so, of their huge scale ballroom area. Pink designs became a perfect solution for the cavernous grand foyer – serving as visual landmarks – which featured a series of modified Moss Event Arches – 30’ wide x 20’high with specially modified Pink signature Turning Birds. Together, these elements delineated the main thoroughfare and afforded a visual excitement to an otherwise uninvolved space where the wildly enthusiastic 6500 attendees passed through.

The highly caffeinated event turned out to be a huge success with thousands of Zumba fanatics buying millions of dollars of merchandise in a frenzied atmosphere all bolstered by the extra added visual excitement of Pink products. The client was thrilled.

• Gold furniture – the sort of Lux, over the top furniture, White with rhinestones that kind of thing.  Several companies highlighted in this look  - AFR, Lounge22 Powered by Cort, Luxe Event Rentals, and Lounge Appeal.

• Rustic – Country look – Town and Country highlighted their Vineyard Line with lots of distressed countrified Furniture.  This trend also came through loud and clear in the ISES LA Table Top Display Competition.

• Inflatable décor, new players coming in from China, along with AirDD from the LA area and Inflate showing different ways of using self contained fabric inflatables. Also Blofield, this one is inflated chairs that tie into the Lux line of furniture!

• Entertainment – from Elegant Figures as the work of Champaign Creative to a much more Gritty Cirque of Zen Arts, and lots of music, entertainment continues to be a major part of the LA events scene.  I also loved Zoltar – the mind reader in a box – by San Diego Spotlight Entertainment.

• Social Media Lounge – this concept keeps rearing it’s head and it a great addition to a the trade show environment – bringing the digital world together with the real life. This rendition featured Lindsay Fultz of Middle Child New Media (@LindayFultz  ) and Jenise Fryatt from Icon Presentations (@JeniseFryatt).  They really got some great information and connectivity going with education, games and prizes too!

• Unusual venues continue to be popular – several museums – Madam Tussaud’s and the Hollywood Museum participated as well as diverse spots like LA Live.  I must tell you that being across from Lady GaGa was quite a site to see. People are really drawn to the figures. She looked so real. People walked right by my giant fabric sculptures to peruse her realistic wax skin.  Go figure!

Food trends – anyone? What were you seeing out there?

The keynotes both Hilary Harris and David Merrill were very well received as well as Howard Givner’s Event Learning Institute sessions.  AOO’s set design and production added large circular screens at the sides with related material – a great addition to the main stage.
